Better Know a Sport: Baseball

While this blog has not mentioned the sport of baseball in many moons, I thought it would be an appropriate time to mention that next week the MLB playoffs begin. On a related note, DudeSpin (well, 1/4 of the editorial board) sends its heartiest congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for winning the AL East for the first time since 1995. Back then I spent every day going to a high school cheering for Tim Wakefield. Oh how things have changed! Other great names from that '95 team? Mo Vaughn, Aaron Sele, Mike Greenwell, Jose Canseco, and Roger Clemens!

Today is Airborne's day, so the next several posts will be about a shocking upset in Florida (Duke's first of the year--it's last will be in Jacksonville), but I thought it important to remind our readers that other sports do indeed exist.

Gee, it's amazing what a $200 million payroll will get you.

I wouldn't put it past Francona to be filming the other team's catcher and stealing signs

Dear Head Dude,
When the Rangers forever changed baseball salaries, I'm pretty sure they were trying to buy a World Series. How did that work out? In fact, during the late 90s and early 2000s, the Rangers were consistently in the top-5 spending teams. And some of those years you even almost got out of the first round! But now Juan is Gone and you are left a bitter and empty man trying to belittle my team's success. Good for you.
And dude, maybe someday your city will have a sports team that is worth talking about, but with the expection of a tall Chinaman and two years when Michael Jordan got bored, Houston has been a consistent blackhole of sports nothingness.

Well Undude, if you're talking about hypocrisy, how about calling a team the Evil Empire, and then outspending that team by millions for the rights to an unknown Japanese pitcher with a made-up offspeed pitch? Not to mention desperately trying to trade for that very player who "forever changed baseball salaries"?
We'll see your self-proclaimed greatest team of all time in Texas Stadium in two weeks!

Well dude, you've once again changed the subject back to football, and if I were a Rangers fan, I guess I would do the same.

I look forward to that meeting in two weeks. I think we'll see just how big a difference there is between the Pats and the other undefeated also-rans.
