The Day You Knew Was Coming...

Even though some of us were hoping it wouldn't.

ESPN and the AP are reporting that as of 2 pm, Ted Roof will no longer be coaching Duke football. It's pretty amazing when you read the stats even though we all know them: three consecutive winless ACC seasons, a 22-game losing streak followed by a nine-game skid after the win at Northwestern.

Hopefully Roof will get another chance to coach somewhere, but let's face it: it's going to take a long time to even get his career coaching record back to .500 after going 6-45 with the Blue Devils.

Roof seemed to be a likeable guy, and the players at least publicly supported him, so at the least, he was a vast improvement over woebegone Carl Franks. But results have to matter at least somewhat, and other than being more competitive, is there any guarantee there would've been improvement next year? It's all the more reason, though, why Alleva needs to hire someone experienced, who can do like Goldsmith did with Red Wilson's players in '94, or at least get 4-5 wins with a weaker schedule. Otherwise, it's the same vicious cycle of a new coach taking over players he can't coach and needing at least 3-4 years to put his system in place.
Can we steal Jim Grobe?

Well I didn't want to say anything until it was official (I did love watching WRAL last night and hearing them comment that there was no word, yet already talking about the Roof era in the past tense) but Undude have you written your letter yet?
Has Dudespin agreed to take out a full page ad in the USA Today so you can make the pitch to a former professional coach who has a daughter or two attending school in the Raleigh area???
The time is now.

Big Daddy
PS. I was, I admit, a little disappointed not to see a headline somewhere that said
"The Roof, the Roof, the Roof has been fired"
