Something new is Bruin...

Although this seems to me like a pretty big fall in terms of coaching gigs, especially when you read about his pals in the NFL, SI reports that Duke is now looking at Karl Dorrell, UCLA's former coach.

From 10-2 and knocking off USC to taking over Airborne? I guess we'll see...

If that report is true, doesn't that mean Broadway just interviewed Broadway to appease the NCAAP folks? That leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

oops... just realized that Dorrell is also black; comment withdrawn

Nice work, Dude.
This dichotomy raises an interesting question -- do you prefer a guy who led a should-be powerhouse to five straight bowls but couldn't push them into the elite, or a guy who had success with a lesser team like Grambling State and hasn't shown what he can do in a power conference? I'm not so sure Dorrell is an easy choice -- it might be a shock coming to Duke, even if we lower our academic standards for recruiting. Broadway may be more used to coaching an underdog.
Either way, it would be a tremendous statement if we could be one of only six schools with a black coach, especially if he succeeds. Alleva's not exactly what you'd call a trailblazer, but at least he's possibly focusing on two qualified minority candidates.

Good to see those liberal sensibilities emerging from the corporate lawyer once again!

I think you bring up some good points, and I too wonder if a mediocre coach at a big school is the right choice compared to someone more used to being at a low-ranking school in terms of recruiting appeal. That's why Johnson would have been great...

But Dorrell did have one pretty awesome year, and I have to wonder if his shortcomings are more due to the fact that USC has established itself as such a force in LA.

But of course, ultimately I know nothing about either of these guys, so we'll just have to hope Joe makes the right decision... like he did with Franks, Roof, Hillier (baseball), dunken boating, the lax situation, Coach G, etc. Though in fairness, the volleyball program is much stronger now thanks to his hire of that lady who now has them consistently ranked and among the best in the ACC.

Joe can be credited with unquestionably strengthening the volleyball and field hockey programs with key hires, and really, is there anything else Iron Dukes are more concerned about?

I realize in thinking about it, that I'm finding faults with Dorrell when a) he may be out of our league, and b) he'd be a tremendous step up from Franks and Roof when they took over the program. So I probably shouldn't be complaining -- realistically, he'd be a good hire, as would Broadway, Bowden, and many of the other names being bandied about.

That said, I guess I've just looked at UCLA as I do at Michigan in basketball -- there's no way they shouldn't be better, and particularly given the LA lifestyle, you'd think a lot of dudes would want to play there and would choose the big state school over the so-called University of Spoiled Children. Of course, Carroll may be the best coach in the country, so if Dorrell can still finish 8-4 in Carroll's backyard, well by golly that should be good enough for Durham.

Yes, it wasn't that long ago that Dorrell's UCLA program was being touted by the Worldwide Leader as one that would soon be in position to challenge USC. Then the Bruins imploded this year - losing to Notre Dame, for goodness sake - and he was out of a job.

That being said, I'd welcome him at Duke, and I do think he'd be a step up over Roof.
