the flashbulbs are popping... what a stage! i'm sure ths will be mocked by the GOP - but if their candidate could fill a football stadium, they would no doubt do it in a heartbeat!

Another shout out to Dick Durbin to start the speech - just like 04!

The Dude said...

a very early nod to Hillary Clinton - a bit unexpected. And now Bill as well!

The Dude said...

didn't take long to the epected middle class focus. but he's right - we are better than the last 8 years!

The Dude said...

and the meat cleaver is out on McCain - here comes the 90% - hilarious line about a 10% chance on change!

The Dude said...

the cuts are really sharp now on mccain - a nice job of painting him as out of touch.

The Dude said...

way to use his family to counter the GOP's charges of celebrism

The Dude said...

love the crowd shots, esp. if the folks have moist eyes.

The Dude said...

barack's big on education! pay attention undude!

The Dude said...

service for education - now that's what hope is!

O-ba-ma!
O-ba-ma!
O-ba-ma!

Head Dude said...

The visuals are playing out better than anyone could've hoped for.

The Dude said...

individual responsible and mutual responsibility - that's the essence of barack's campaign!

The Dude said...

great line about not following bin laden to the cave where he lives.

Head Dude said...

John McCain likes to say that he'll follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell, but McCain won't even follow Bin Laden to the cave where he lives.

Head Dude said...

Don't tell me the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy won't defend this country!

Head Dude said...

Red and blue America are back!

The Dude said...

i like bringing out that we are the party of kennedy and roosevelt - we are strong on national defense.

The Dude said...

you're right head dude - red and blue states are back - but the examples he gives (same sex couples, immigration, gun control) are left-leaning, which i like

The Dude said...

no fresh ideas - use scare tactics! that's all the republicans do!

The Dude said...

this election is about me!!

The Dude said...

look at all those folks listening intently... terrific tie from the promise of america to MLK's I have a dream.

Head Dude said...

The long-awaited MLK reference comes near the end.

Head Dude said...

Keep in mind -- Obama wrote this himself last week.
There's NO chance McCain is writing his speech, just as Bush never coined an original word.

The Dude said...

dudes, we cannot turn back - we must march ahead!

Head Dude said...

I love the 85,000 waving American flags.

The Dude said...

nice quote from the scripture at the end!

The Dude said...

a country song is the sign off song?? that's odd.

Head Dude said...

Stevie Wonder already song Sign, Sealed, Delivered.
You gotta have a little country to appeal to middle America.

Head Dude said...

This definitely is some weird music.

The Dude said...

olbermann and matthews both climaxed at the end i think; matthews sounds like he's just catching his breath now!

ThadisRad said...

I am horrified by the musical choice... While I enjoyed his very aggressive attacks on McCain, does it contradict his politics as usual message?

Head Dude said...

I think he said enough about moving away from the politics of old and fear to keep his change message, while still hitting McCain hard enough.

ThadisRad said...

I worry that will be a tough tight rope to walk over the coming months...

ThadisRad said...

And how on earth does McCain hope to even begin to compete with this guy in head-to-head debates?

Head Dude said...

I think Obama has the "change" thing firmly entrenched, so a little hand-to-hand combat can be done without putting a chink in the armor. Let's face it, he has to show he's tough enough to win, and he did what was necessary tonight.

The Dude said...

obama is a better speaker than he is a debater - he comes off as too professorial, and his verbal tics are more apparent in debates.

Head Dude said...

The dude is right, and the problem is, expectations will be too high for Obama. Unfortunately, the first debate is foreign policy and last debate is economy -- foreign policy is much better suited to McCain's short and meaningless, but well-received, sound bites.

ThadisRad said...

And of course George Bush couldn't have looked worse at one of those debates in 2004, and really, it didn't seem to hurt him.

Well, I will go to bed dreaming of that line about questioning the judgment of someone who thinks George Bush is right 90% of the time. Brilliant!

Oops...completely forgot about the liveblog as I was so caught up in the speech. I guess I couldn't have made it work anyway, since the computer and tv are in different rooms and I actually wanted to both see and hear him.

Well looks like it's all been said. I too loved that line on 10% chance on change. Brilliant indeed. The "kid" shots (his daughters waving to the cameras like we all do after we notice we are on live tv) were priceless!!
