Super Saturday?

What shaped up as a glorious Saturday with 10 hours of basketball is, at the halfway turn, a big bust. I cheer for Maryland for the first time in 32 years ... only to recognize that cheering for Maryland means you're often faced with a blowout. So after a nap that began midway through the first half, the second half of today's quadruple-header is now underway. And UNC is tied early, with the big showdown against hated Texas to come.

I should add that thanks to living in Texas, that means today's lineup after the national Villanova opener, is Texas A&M, followed by Oklahoma, concluding with Texas. At least the latter is the right one to have on TV. So I get to watch Lawson's toe on the internet.

We're at the third TV time out ... and it's LSU by 1. Lawson's ouchie seemed to be re-aggravated by "diving" for a loose ball, and you have to figure his return is in doubt. LSU's four-minute scoring drought gave UNC an opportunity to run out to a big lead, but a Hansborough airball and travel helped keep it close.
In other words, early signs are positive!

Well, near the fourth TV timeout, Lawson has returned, and UNC has taken off to a 15-4 run. He still looks slow, but LSU doesn't seem to have many weapons other than Mitchell and Temple, who I forgot were freshmen back in '06. Makes that loss sting all over again.

LSU breaks out of the gate to start the second half on a 13-3 run to take the lead. Highlighted by two blocks of Hansbrough.
Geaux Tigers!

LSU by 3. Duke fans cheering for LSU ... which means payback in the nightcap ... unless UNC loses and their fans go home crying.

It's basically over now. UNC just has too much for LSU, which is pretty much what I expected. Lawson at 75 percent is still too much for most teams.

I don't expect Gonzaga to be too tough either...assuming they win tonight.

The refs are really allowing a pretty physical game thus far. I have to think that plays in Texas' favor.

Are you saying we're soft???

The Franchise said...

I'm saying the best way to beat us is to punch us in the mouth, figuratively speaking.

The Ricky Time Guy said...

I thought that was "Old Duke"...wait... sorry...wrong sport.
They seem to handling it so far but I don't disagree with your analysis.

I think this team is mentally tougher but not necessarily physically tougher, and that's where a less-skilled team like Texas could hang with us.

But in any case we have the Longhorns befuddled with our D right now.

I'm not sure if I feel like we should be up by more, or less. Our defense is close to forcing a lot of turnovers, but they're hanging around even with Abrams being hounded.
Would be nice for Henderson to pass a little more.

Or take it to the hoop instead of settling for the off-balance fade away 19 ft jumper.

Yeah, I guess that's the main thing. His drive at the end of the half was his first. I'd like to see Singler a little more assertive and a few more screens to set up Scheyer for threes.
Zoubek had a great half.

Gotta love those ammonia strong drives of Henderson in this half.

Kellogg needs to get Abrams' dick out of his mouth ... especially since a fellow member of the Old Testament club has locked him down the whole game.

Great timeout there by K after Nolan's carry. With Scheyer's turnover coming first, makes sure to settle them down with Pittman coming back in.

Crap ... we should've put this one away a few minutes ago and now it may go down to the wire.

As usual Duke makes this more interesting than it needs to be.
A nail-biter in the making.

Scheyer=HUGE

The Singler tip-in, Scheyer's throw, offensive rebounds ... this certainly balances all of the karma from the plays that went against us the last two tournaments.

I was thinking the same thing. The three that was down but comes out, the missed tip in, the silly fouls, bounces our way.

I don't know if it's all the "issues"/"troubles" of the past few years or what, but I feel more relieved than anything else that we made it to the Sweet 16. Anything else is almost gravy at this point.

Yeah, I'm sure come Thursday night, I'll be really fired up. But right now, it's just nice to be back in the second weekend. Given how badly Pitt played yesterday, we'll see how they bounce back tomorrow, but Villanova will be really tough.
I really like this team, probably as much as any since '02, so it's nice to have a little longer to enjoy it.

the foul called on nolan smith's follow attempt was the biggest play of the game - whether a foul was actually committed? that's a different question. I was at a friend's place watching the game - sorry for the late arrival to the Liveblog.

I was just reading an SI.com guy talking about the Villanova/UCLA game and I had to chuckle.

"So far, second-seeded Duke has managed to cobble together an effective inside game without a traditional go-to threat. But it'll be difficult for the Blue Demons to get that going if the Wildcats keep up their tough guy act."

We've been out of the picture for so long that we've now getting confused with Depaul???

As for Nova, it will be a long game if we can't figure out a way to stop the dribble-drive which they do better than Texas.

Not a good night for Texas as I see former Journey head and the Texas Women went down in the first round to Miss St.
